Somethings Hiding in Here

So excited to see Somethings Hiding In Here as this Monday's featured seller on Etsy! Shauna and Stephen are a charming couple who make clever things and live in a charming loft. Add them to your list of handmade shops for this holiday season.

I'm hoping to post about handmade/independent shops and brands I'm totally in love with all keep checking back here for updates. It's our goal to make this gift giving season as handmade as possible. It's important for us to consider how we spend our money, where that money goes and how it affects people in both good and bad ways. We would like to see the number of successful independent businesses grow. The money we spend as individuals has a much larger proportional effect on local and independent business than it does on large international corporations - a few small decisions to spend money locally and with independent businesses can have a significant effect. Keep that in mind as you make your holiday wish lists this season...and have fun with it!

We took the day off yesterday to enjoy, relax and reflect for Thanksgiving. It was a perfect day spent with those we love. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday of the year. My favorite Thanksgiving memories have happened in the years that Jeremy and I have been together, always spending the day with friends and family and loving every minute. My thoughts and wishes this year are with my youngest brother who was recently deployed to Afghanistan (on a whim a few years ago, he joined the Marines...he has a bit of an invincibility complex) - I miss him terribly, fear for him daily and expect his safe return in a few months.

I also want to express my gratitude to you - it is because of each of you that we have been able to turn an experiment into a full time thriving business. We work hard everyday to realize this dream. We have a lot of learning yet to do as we stabilize and grow. We hope you will stick with us as we continue this journey. We have made a number of huge leaps this year - trading the financial comfort of a salaried job for the opportunity to build a handmade business has been one of the biggest decisions Jeremy and I have made together (a big career change but one we have not regretted for a second!). We took on a lot with the renovation of two buildings while running a business and raising a child but on the days I feel most tired or the most worn out from sewing, I inevitably receive an email from one of you letting us know how much your Moop bag has meant to you. Those emails are so important to me! Thank you for your kindness and generosity, it has meant the world to us.

Wishing you all the best all the time,

Wendy, Jeremy, Parker & Mouse (the kitty queen of our house)

The Clutch in brown and organic gold

We just finished making The Clutch in brown corded canvas and organic golden yellow. It's in the shop/s now: on the website, on Supermarket and on Etsy. This little bag is perfect for so many things. It is small, but it holds a surprising amount. I carry one as a wallet - it's stuffed full with all of my credit cards, checkbook, a filing cabinet of receipts, chapstick, business cards, etc. etc. etc.

Have a great weekend

I just want to wish you all a happy and productive weekend - we have been working on getting new things in the shop so you can order them in time for the holidays. I have been editing the photos for the Letter Bag in rosewood with the adjustable will be in the shop before the weekend is over. We are also adding a new color to The Messenger's so nice! Jeremy particularly likes this one. He feels it is the most gender neutral color, boys and girls, if you've been looking for a color that is just's almost here!

p.s. my t-shirt is from Timber! one of my favorite t-shirt designers! Find the Timber shop here.

Falling Water

We had some friends in town from Massachusetts this past weekend and we spent Saturday at Falling Water. Aside from The Guggenheim, this was my first time visiting any Frank Lloyd Wright buildings. It was just the experience I needed to break my mind from the chaos of the last few months. I loved the house, the interior design, the art, the furniture, the woods, the falls, the moss covered grounds, the interior gardens, the thought that went into every step...I loved everything about it. Parker especially loved it. She told us she wants to live there. What can you say, she has good taste.

Much of our energy has been focused on building out the studio building but we have been at a loss for what the interior should ultimately look like. It has been a very organic process thus far...simply responding to the space as we take out walls, replace beams, raise the ceiling, connect spaces together, etc., etc. I think I really needed to see a space like Falling Water - so ahead of its time yet so timeless. I will take some photos this week of the renovations on the second floor of the building to share with you all (nothing more has been done at the house...and likely will not be done until the spring...except, we did get the gas line replaced! hooray for heat!). Until then, enjoy your days!

One side note:

I just want to remind everyone that it is just Jeremy and I sewing and we do make every Moop bag upon order so be sure to plan ahead and order early for holiday delivery...especially if you are having it shipped outside of the United States. We have not made a cutoff date for holiday orders, we will just be responding to order volume over the next few weeks.

The Moth: Stories Told

I like to listen to things while I work. Lately it has been mostly the news from NPR. I guess because it's what I'm supposed to be listening to...because it's important to know what goes on in the world outside of Moop studios. But, I often tire of listening to the news or simply can't listen or just don't want to. My youngest brother is a Marine. Two weeks ago he deployed to Afghanistan. Soooo, right now I particularly don't like to listen to the news. In my search for something else to listen to, I discovered The Moth: Stories Told. It's a great form of escapism. Here are two of my favorites so by Joan Juliet Buck and one by Mike Birbiglia...both will make you laugh.

You can also download many of the Moth podcasts for free on iTunes.

Have a great weekend!

The Letter Bag is new again!

I have been so anxious to get this into the shop. We have been working on this evolution of The Letter Bag for quite.some.time (almost since the first Letter Bag was released back in May!). We knew this bag was great, but we knew it could be even better with the addition of an adjustable strap. This is no simple thing to add, though. With a bag this size, we knew we needed to have a very specific piece of hardware to withstand the weight of everything you might put inside (like computers). So we custom ordered a set of d-rings that are welded and finished exactly how we want them.

This was a new process for us. We learned that it takes a loooong time to custom order hardware and you have to order it in very large quantities. But it was a great experience, our hardware suppliers are fantastic and helped us every step of the way (even though we are likely one of their tiniest companies to work with). An added bonus is this hardware will now be used on all of our bags with removable, all of our bags just got a bit better - yay!

Now, how to order...We have the gunmetal and the black in the shop and will be adding the option to the rosewood quite soon. You will be given the option of ordering with the strap or without the strap..but all of the new Letter Bags will be made with the d-rings so you can add a strap later if you don't want to order it right away. You can find the gunmetal here and the black here. I hope you love it as much as I do!

p.s. you can also find them in our Supermarket shop, here and here.
and our Etsy shop, here and here.
