It's Summer Time!

The Porter makes a great summertime bag.  It's large, water resistant and washable.  Perfect for outdoor summertime fun.  Parker has been carrying one around stuffed full with all her summertime gear.  And while she's been enjoying her days at the pool she has also missing Massachusetts and her swims in the Plainfield Pond with her friend Fiona and looking forward to camp and a beach trip later this summer....

Making home

As most of you know, we are doing a 100% top to bottom renovation of our house.  It's a big project that we have had little time to work on.  Our house is in mostly a state of disarray.  It wears on me at times so I find myself doing small temporary projects while we are "in process" to try and make this ramshackle house more of a home.  We have a window in the kitchen that looks directly at the side of our neighbors house.  It's at ground level but I did not want to put a curtain up.  Instead, I decided to build a few quick shelves across the window and use plants as a pseudo screen.  It was super easy and has made our kitchen feel much more inviting.  I was a little more casual with my attachment methods because I know the window and window well will be rebuilt so you might want to take a little more care if you decide to build your own.  Here's what you will need:
  • 4 inch wide boards cut to the width of your window well (I inset mine into the window so they would not stick out too far).  Use as many as will fill your window's height.  Be sure to leave enough room for the height of your plants or knick knacks.
  • L-brackets, 2 for each board
  • drill
  • screws
  • a level (my shelves are level, but I found out our window is not so my shelves look crooked!)
Attach the L-brackets to the bottom of each board.  Mount each shelf into the window well using a level to keep everything straight.  It's sometimes easier to have a second person with this step...but, not absolutely necessary.  Pay attention to how close you mount your shelves to the window...you want to make sure the window will still open when the shelves are installed.  Now, fill it with plants or whatever else you would like to display.

Early Summer Mornings

My favorite time of year is summer and I most love warm early mornings.  I do not like the cold.  It is very hard for me to be a morning person in the winter months.  But, once spring has become a fleeting memory and summer is in full swing I love to get up early, make a pot of coffee and begin my mornings on the screened in porch.  School ended just a week or so ago for Parker and this morning I noticed all the signs of a happy summer well underway: her towel and swim suit hanging to dry on the chair, a stack of magazines (she's 12 but still a big fan of Ranger Rick and National Geographic Kids), soccer balls and softball gloves, lilies blooming in the back yard and early summer morning light.  I know, it looks like we have a scrappy back porch (and we do..yes, that's a drywall cart you see in the corner) but it's my favorite place in the world.

The 2010 Urban Garden Party at The Mattress Factory

We're going to The Mattress Factory's Garden Party tonight...are you!??!

**UPDATE**
The party was a blast!  You really can't go wrong with a half pipe in the courtyard of a museum, fancy drinks made with chartreuse and hibiscus tea, beer stashed in a canoe and Eclectic Method.  My favorite quote from the night: "Find your way up into the offices and up to the giant inflatable woman"

The Scapes are in!

I just picked up a bunch of garlic scapes from my local farmers market.  I have never used them before but the lovely gal I bought them from had an amazingly tasty pesto of just 4 simple ingredients made from the scapes for us to try.  It sounds so easy...perfect for this late start to dinner (it's 9pm! who's the adult in charge here?!)

here's her recipe:

1 bunch garlic scapes, chopped
olive oil (a few glugs)
salt
pepper

puree in a food processor

I don't have a food processor so I'll try it with my stick blender???

I'll let you know how it goes!

Hello! It's been a while!

Hi everyone!  Sorry it's been so long...it's been bizzzy around here, for sure!  We've had softball games and camp signups and roller coaster riding and end of school year craziness and lots of people in and out of the studio and trips to see pals in not so far away cities and lots of rain and tons of production happening and ongoing studio renovations and family visiting (which means I'm tired by the time I get home and I forget to tell you about what's been going on) - So, I'm just stopping in to say HELLO!!

A few things I'm interested in today.  I'm a big fan of Caitlin from Mociun and she will be doing a video chat thing with Closetista today at noon EST..if you're  not working or basking in the sun, you should watch it (then tell me about it because it's the last day of school for P.dog and I won't get to see it until later!)  And, if you love her stuff...I have one of these that does not fit me right that I would love to sell to someone who will wear it and show it off.  It has never been worn...if you're interested, I would like to sell it for 90 bucks (which is a steal for her fabulous dresses!) so, email me!

Also, I'm a big fan of Wolf Parade (they're from Montreal...another thing I'm a big fan of!!) and they have a new album coming out at the end of this month - mark your calendars!  Or pre-order via Sub-Pop.

Also also, we now have a mailing list!!!  We mail out special sales, news, updates and all sorts of Moop goodness.  Don't worry, we will not fill up your inbox with daily chatter...just every few weeks or so.  You can sign up by clicking here (or filling in the box part-way down the sidebar on the right side of this here blog).

Also also also! If you have not heard - Moop bags are all shipping within 3-5 business days!  And our Etsy shop is stocked only with items that will ship within 1-2 business days (stock there will rotate..so keep your pretty little eyes on it).

One very last thing - My little brother is a Marine and he just arrived safely home from Afghanistan.  That, friends, brings me lots of happiness.  I am so so happy to have him home. That's he and Parker throwing up peace signs at Coca Cafe.

Hope you're heading into a lovely weekend!  It's beautiful in Pittsburgh today!
