Basil tarragon mojitos with friends

One of my most favorite things to do is gather together some of my favorite people and share a meal so, last night we had a small dinner party.  I made Brazilian Fish Stew (a recipe from my friend Lena) and paired it with basil tarragon mojitos (these also made an appearance at our studio party a few weeks ago).  The whole night was so much fun...the most fun I've had in quite some time.  I'll share the fish stew on another occasion because I really want to share the mojito recipe - the weather will soon turn cold and these are best on a hot summer evening...so invite some friends over and make these!

Here's what I did:

A few hours before you'll be serving these, make a simple syrup:

Combine 1cup sugar and 3 cups water in a saucepan and heat until sugar is entirely dissolved (the sugar is fully dissolved when the mixture no longer looks cloudy).
Turn off heat and add a few sprigs of basil and tarragon..stems and all.
Set aside and let cool.

NEXT:

Juice 8-10 limes (only use fresh lime juice…it's much much better!)
Gather up one hearty handful of fresh basil (about 2 cups with stems)
and
One healthy bunch of fresh tarragon (about 1 cup with stems)
(these can stay mostly whole bunches…you'll muddle them in the next step)

Combine the above three ingredients in a large glass pitcher.
Using a flat muddler or wooden spoon, muddle the herbs and lime juice.  This releases the oils of the herbs which adds depth and flavor to your drink.

Add 2 cups of your simple syrup to the glass pitcher & stir. (save the remaining in a glass jar for another use)

Next add one entire 750mL bottle of white rum.  Whatever kind you prefer…though the better your rum, the better your drink.  We used Cruzan.

Mix a bit more.

Top off the pitcher with seltzer.

thinly slice two limes and add to your pitcher…mix up a bit more.  You'll end up with a beautiful drink that everyone will enjoy!

note:

This makes a very strong drink.  We started with a cup full of ice, filled it 3/4 of the way with the mojito mixture and topped off with seltzer.  I love cocktails but not when they are sugary sweet.  This one is just the right balance of refreshing basil, slightly licorice-y tarragon, limes and rum.  It might be the best drink I've ever made.

note 2:

This could also be made without alcohol as a summer limeade.  Simply use all of the simple syrup and in place of rum, use seltzer. Equally as delicious and refreshing.

A new school year

Every year I make Parker a new school bag.  We talk about what she wants, her color choices, features she would like and I build it for her.  It's one of the only custom bags I make each year.  I think she likes that no one else has a bag like hers and I love that she wants to carry a bag that I made for her.

Here is this year's new school bag.  She wanted the red waxed canvas and a two strap backpack. It looks so cute on her!  I finished it the evening before the first day of school so this is the only photo I snapped...I'll take more this weekend and post them to our flicker page...it's super cute!

Threehouse from Tugboat

Completely in love with this new Treehouse Lookout print from my most favorite new friends at Tugboat.

Also, Bike Pittsburgh's annual Bikefest fundraiser is tomorrow night.  Have you bought your tickets? It's a great way to go to one of the best parties in the city and support bicycle advocacy...aka: making the streets safer for bikers and drivers.  I ride my bike daily and to show my support for this important organization, Moop has donated a bag to their silent auction.  It will be on display at the party where you can place your bid.  All proceeds go to Bike Pittsburgh.  Be sure to check the schedule as there are ongoing activities between the 12th and 21st for all ages and abilities.

The Hare and The Hippo

I love these floor mats from Droog.  Basically, I love Droog, so I love these floor mats even more.  One of my most favorite experiences with art and design came when Jeremy and I were on our working honeymoon in Italy (we did an artists residency program instead of a honeymoon).  At the very end of our trip we spent a few days in Zurich.  One day, while wandering around, we came upon Museum Bellerive where there was a huge Droog exhibition.  It was one of the unexpected highlights of our trip.  We were instantly enamored.  Anyhow, I digress.  These floor mats would be perfect in our studio entryways.  The season of cold snow and rain is coming soon and it's always a challenge to keep all of the road salts and street grime at bay.  This would be a fun way to handle the necessary presence of heavy duty floor mats.

Ali Sandifer Studio

Yesterday I had a super nice email exchange with a customer.  One of those exchanges that really makes me smile and reminds me of how lucky I am to get to spend my days doing what I do.  It was very nice to discover that he, too is a maker of beautiful beautiful things.  As many of you know, we are doing a top to bottom gut renovation of our house - a long tedious process - but I am certain that one day we will finish and will make it to the stage where we get to pick out the accessories that will fill our home.  This chair is at the top of my list.  Actually, I would like a pair.  They look beautifully made.

July 24th

Loved seeing this on Cup of Jo this morning.  Joanna re-posted some photos from New York Magazines slideshow of some of the first couples to be married under New York's new marriage equality laws.  Ruthie and Connie are in their 70's were engaged for 36 years!  I bet they were super excited!  Such fun wedding photos and so nice to see steps of progress in our world.
